Europe and its beauty is no secret. However, there are some hidden treasures and picturesque places undiscovered by the majority of travelers: Luxembourg is one such place and undoubtedly one of the most charming places in Europe to visit (that I’ve been to so far). Luxembourg the city, and Luxembourg the country are true hidden jewels.

Being one of the smallest countries in Europe makes it fairly easy to navigate, and spending time here proved very worthwhile; I really can’t recommend it enough…

I hope that after reading this post, you will be inspired to add this destination to your next European adventure.

The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which tells you how just steeped Luxembourgish history is – Luxembourg is at the heart of Europe, surrounded by Germany, France, and Belgium.

The language on display here is incredibly diverse – Luxembourgish is the nation’s formal language but if you speak either English, French or German you will be able to communicate because most people speak them.

We spent a weekend here visiting my dear friends Anamaría and Juls, and soon found out that what Luxembourg lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty. The city used to be a fortress city which was completely surrounded by high stone walls, some of which still remain to this day (and are an architects dream). Below the fortified castle, a unique 17 kilometers of casemates remain that you can visit. The beauty of the city is found in its architecture, both ancient and modern. The old square and fortification are fabulous to wander and explore; we had a great time walking, taking pictures and listening to Anamaría (she was the best tour guide!)

After walking across the Adolphe Bridge you come to Canon Hill – this towering monument was constructed in 1971 as a commemoration for those that fought in the Second World War. An eternal flame burns in front of the monument which offers the people of Luxembourg a memory of how the nation fought back and resisted Nazi intrusion. Its location and stunning views across the valley are other impressive features.

The monument of remembrance is another important landmark. It represents Luxembourgish history and is the headquarters of the most amazing Christmas market. The Christmas Markets here are jaw-dropping, and more beautiful than the ones we encountered in other cities (that includes Munich!). They have so many amenities for families (especially the smaller ones).

We went to the National Museum of Art and History of Luxembourg which was also truly amazing, and definitely, a must see.

My friends insisted on taking us to Vianden Castle and went on a snowy Sunday making for an incredibly picturesque setting. It sits on a rock overhang which is at its viewing best when you first come around the curve in the road. It has been fully restored and was the perfect way to spend our last day in Luxembourg.

For sure, Luxembourg was my favorite discovery of my last trip to Europe. It is also one of the safest and cleanest cities I’ve ever been. So if you are planning your next vacation and you are going to a country near to Luxembourg, I highly recommend spending a couple of days there.

I hope you fall in love with the pictures…
